What is the difference between a Histotechnician and a Histotechnologist

i’m an mls and i wonder sometimes what else is out there for us to do besides the usual areas of the lab (hematology, micro, chemistry, etc), and noticed the hospital i work for has two job postings: a histotechnician and a histologist. what is the difference between an ht and and htl? mlt and mls responsibilities are the same and the only difference is education level). what are the pros and cons of the job? depends on where you live. in my state, the local license allows me work as an htl with an ht cert. but generally an htl is more responsibility and complex things to do, along with the increased pay.

just beware the test has more topics in it (enzyme histochemistry, ihc, supervisor type questions), while the bulk of the ht test is special stains and troubleshooting. i love the fast paced nature of a hospital setting. good luck on your goal! i’m not sure about the transition from mls to htl but i am aware most working facilities require ascp htl certification to be considered a registered htl. definitely go for htl because it can help you in the long run over ht. and provides good technical notes that may appear on the exam. my facility said they take either an htl or mls certification, but if i am moving that direction with my career, i will look into taking the htl.
