expressive arts therapy is one of five master’s programs offered through ciis’ counseling psychology department. throughout, students engage with peers and faculty in a collaborative, liberatory-focused, arts-based environment. the expressive arts therapy program trains future leaders in the expressive arts therapy field. the expressive arts therapy program uses the power of the arts as tools for human development and healing, psycho-spiritual growth, social change, and empowered self-agency. in the third year, students engage in a year-long, supervised practicum to gain experience through face-to-face client work.

the master’s in counseling psychology with a concentration in expressive arts therapy is a bbs-approved, three-year, low-residency degree program for california residents. students are expected to attend an in-person, one-week intensive, held at the start of each fall and spring semester on ciis’ mission street campus. synchronous virtual clinical practice weekends are scheduled two to four times during the semester depending on coursework. the master’s in counseling psychology with a concentration in expressive arts therapy degree program meets the educational requirements for mft licensure in the state of california, and lpcc in the state of california with additional optional units.
