i’m looking at a potential role with marcus and millichap. is this a brokerage that you’d suggest for an entry level broker learning the ropes. they don’t have much support for their junior employees as they don’t view them as investments, but the ones that do last a few years are seen as having made it. this is the impression i always got too. m&m at least in my city seems to have different names all the time, and not because they switch to other brokerages. m&m seems to have a take anyone and you are basically working in a call center until you get established approach that i’d not say is common in this industry though. just speaking from some friends i have that work for brokerages like that, they tend to operate on longer term plans too and business strategies per agent that get more complex than “call this many people, get a listing, and sell it in 12 months or you are out”. i currently work as a tenant rep broker for one of the other firms that you mentioned in an earlier reply and i also interned at marcus.
to echo other comments, yes, m&m is a bit of a chop shop. i have a buddy that started his career there and is doing well after 3 years. everyone has to put $20 in the pot in the morning and whoever makes the most dials wins. the guy i sat next to would play tetris while making dials. if you decide to do it, make sure to get aligned with a senior broker/mentor. i actually started in property management just so i could get a foot in the door, meet with all the brokers, and wait for one of them to start looking for a junior broker. do not just join a firm and become a broker. this is how you will learn the business, otherwise you will be churned out…especially at a firm like m&m that offers little to no resources for their brokers.
