i was leaning towards petco because of the 1 year contract and i read they let you make your own schedule whereas petsmart wants you to groom as many dogs as physically possible, additionally, i heard a lot of negative things about the new pay scale at petco. i met with management at a petsmart yesterday and she told me they want the groomers and bathers at at least 6 dogs a day. if we didn’t have enough sales they would write you up or you would have to hear it from the salon manager. if we were slow at grooming and the store needed help we had to help. the amount of people that wouldn’t show up or cancelled last min was crazy and you barley ever get tipped. but i also know people that have worked for both companies and they seemed to like it. do what you can at a speed you are comfortable with, we aren’t machines. they are both bad companies that look at you like a money machine. petsmart also will not allow any overtime at all so if you get overbooked or get a couple really scared/naughty dogs back to back at the end of your day then it can get really stressful bc that is something they will write you up for.
along with grooming they expect you to do tons of extra stuff so getting the amount of dogs done that you’d like to do while avoiding overtime is the worst. i worked at petsmart and yes the training. is free but it’s genuinwly just not worth getting caught up in a contract and clients not taking you seriously. i had to do a lot of upselling because their prices are so low and people will come in with a mess of a dog and want a $100 groom for $40, and unless the dog is aggressive, you gotta take pretty much anything that comes in. it’s not a bad place to work as long as you have good management and know what you will and will not do. i work for petco. there are a lot of bullshit policies and they want you to upcharge everything. some of the policies are nice and can really save your ass. you get yelled at if you don’t take a lunch, but cannot guarantee that you have time to take a lunch if you get busy. i have to a similar thing at my current job calling in when we’re slow (i work front desk at a massage studio).
i didn’t do my training at either but i worked for petco. they both want to groom as many dogs as possible. you always had petco’s certified pet stylists. petco groomers not only love what they do, they are trained to the highest standards and i am going to look for a petco! not sure if this is different in canada vs us but the academy i attended was excellent. you pay 8500$ you expect to her high quality training. not a whole lotta love for petsmart grooming., petco vs petsmart grooming training site:www.reddit.com&prmd=sinv, petco grooming, petco grooming, pet grooming classes @ petco, petsmart grooming coupon.
